by the long hornbeam path, the elegant Villa
Tauro offers a remarkable view on a fine gate of ashlar stone,
on the balcony on the first floor and on the triple lancet tympanum
surrounded by beautiful statues, which give pride and peculiarity
to this building. During mid of the 18th century, the Count Francesco
Tauro collected several works of art and archaeological works, among
which the cippus of Druso. The Zumelle Castle, located 445 m. above
sea level, seems to have Roman origin, according to Alpago Novello.

origin is proved by some coins found during excavation works. It was
further extended during the Longobard age and surrounded by a moat
no longer visible. In the centre of the castle stands out a 36 m.-high-tower
having 5 storeys. The current structure dates back to the Middle Age,
when the fortress became a matter of struggle between Trevigiani and
Bellunesi (respectively the inhabitants of Treviso and Belluno). Its
favourable position and its magnificent structure have made this area
a not-to-be-missed place for those who are interested in history and
nature, which is particularly enchanting and striking here. |
