to 1815, it was singular usage to celebrate the wedding of widows
through the battarella, a noisy serenade executed under the windows
of the newly married couple. The "filò", a traditional evening wake
in the stalls during winter, represented an occasion of privileged
transmission of the popular heritage. During such wakes, people
told about their life experiences, legends, fairy tales, songs and
rhymes as well as about flights made by witches towards peaks and
their meeting in the devil's place Piaza del Diaol and mischief
caused by their harmful powers. Several tales featured the Mazarol
as main character, a strange and spiteful wood fellow, dressed in
red, keeper of the secrets of cheese making tradition and having
the power of making the sense of direction lost and causing inextricable
tangles of the tails and manes of farmyard animals.

the fantastic creatures is the mythical basilisk or badalìs, an unreal
creature half snake half birth with an hypnotic look. Moreover, there
were tales about ogres, spirits, bad ladies such as Redosega and Marantega,
the goblin Sanguanel, the Anguane and the Caza Selvarega, a horde
of devil hunters accompanied by wild beasts which were heard running
among the wood and valleys during the night. i.
