Up to 1815, it was singular usage to celebrate the wedding of widows through the battarella, a noisy serenade executed under the windows of the newly married couple. The "filò", a traditional evening wake in the stalls during winter, represented an occasion of privileged transmission of the popular heritage. During such wakes, people told about their life experiences, legends, fairy tales, songs and rhymes as well as about flights made by witches towards peaks and their meeting in the devil's place Piaza del Diaol and mischief caused by their harmful powers. Several tales featured the Mazarol as main character, a strange and spiteful wood fellow, dressed in red, keeper of the secrets of cheese making tradition and having the power of making the sense of direction lost and causing inextricable tangles of the tails and manes of farmyard animals.

Among the fantastic creatures is the mythical basilisk or badalìs, an unreal creature half snake half birth with an hypnotic look. Moreover, there were tales about ogres, spirits, bad ladies such as Redosega and Marantega, the goblin Sanguanel, the Anguane and the Caza Selvarega, a horde of devil hunters accompanied by wild beasts which were heard running among the wood and valleys during the night. i.
